IIn 1989 Governor Guy Hunt declared the first week in December "home coming", he asked that all citizens of small towns come together and welcome new faces to their towns in order to boost economy. Gene and Earlene decided to participate in this event, so the first Saturday and Sunday of December 1989 they opened their doors to more than 3000 people. After all of the hustle and bustle of the weekend was over Earlene felt like the weekend was a success, she declared that this be the 1st annual Christmas in Nauvoo, so the following year in 1990 Earlene went to the Town Hall and asked about hosting a Christmas parade. The Town Agreed. That year Earlene formed the beautification committee to raise money to purchase christmas lights to hang on the power poles of the town, and a 25foot christmas tree thats sits just outside of the hotel, Earlene decorated the hotel(with help from friends and family) and the 2nd annual Christmas in Nauvoo had begun. The parade has had many participants over the years which included Fire Departments, local Schools, Local Churches, Miss Alabama, Miss Walker County, Miss Nauvoo, Marching Bands, and of course, SANTA!!! Just to name a few. This tradition still continues today, this year we will host the 18th annual Christmas Parade on the first Saturday of December. Everyone is welcome.
